How to tow a boat safely on Queensland roads

Safe boat-trailer towing starts with a suitable vehicle and trailer, the actual loaded weight and compliant towing equipment. Queensland guidance places responsibility on the driver for safety, standards and mass limits. Road towing is a different activity from operating a boat or towing a skier on the water.

Plan both the road trip and the boating day

This updates BOATN’s existing “How to safely tow a boat” article. If you need on-water training, use the Queensland boat licence pathway and find a practical trainer. Road towing has its own vehicle and trailer requirements; the Queensland towing guidance is the starting point for those rules.

A boat licence should not be treated as a check that a particular vehicle and trailer combination is suitable. Before buying or borrowing equipment, identify the vehicle’s published towing limits and the trailer’s relevant ratings. Ask a qualified supplier or specialist to clarify anything you cannot establish from the manufacturer’s documentation.

Use the loaded combination, not just the empty boat

Queensland’s guidance explains that the load assessment includes passengers, vehicle equipment and modifications, and the trailer’s load. For a boat trailer that may include the motor, fuel, fishing gear and safety equipment. Check those components against the actual limits using the official towing advice, not simply a boat’s advertised empty weight.

If you cannot establish the loaded weight confidently, get the combination checked rather than estimating from appearance. Loading can change between trips: extra fuel, equipment or passengers may matter. The suitability of couplings, brakes and other equipment also needs to be considered; this article is not a substitute for checking the complete setup.

Allow for different handling on the road

TMR advises drivers to allow for extra length and width, smoother steering and braking, longer stopping distance and the effects of wind and passing traffic. It also discusses reversing assistance and downhill control. Read the driving precautions before setting out, particularly if you are unfamiliar with the trailer or route.

Practise unfamiliar manoeuvres in a safe, suitable setting and arrange competent assistance when needed. Plan enough time for the trip so arrival pressure does not encourage rushed reversing or launch preparation. When you reach the venue, follow the site’s actual directions and keep people clear of moving vehicles and trailers.

Keep road towing separate from on-water towing

Pulling a boat trailer with a car is not the same as a boat or PWC towing a person. The licensing and safety questions differ. If you also intend to tow a skier or tube after launching, review the relevant on-water requirements separately and discuss them with your trainer. One checklist should not be used as permission for both activities.

Frequently asked questions

Can I assess towing suitability from the boat’s empty weight?

No. Consider the actual loaded combination, the manufacturer’s limits and all relevant equipment and passengers.

Does a marine licence approve my car and boat trailer combination?

No. Road-towing standards and responsibilities must be checked separately from on-water licensing.

Which extra loads should I consider when assessing a boat-trailer combination?

Consider the actual vehicle and trailer loads, including passengers, modifications, the motor, fuel and carried equipment. An advertised empty boat weight is not the complete combination.

Where should I confirm the tow vehicle’s limits?

Check the manufacturer’s documentation and the relevant equipment ratings. Seek competent advice or weighing assistance when the actual loaded combination is uncertain.

Does towing a trailer change the way I should drive?

Yes. Queensland guidance discusses extra space, smoother control, longer stopping distances and the effects of wind and passing traffic. Prepare for the actual combination rather than driving as if the vehicle were unladen.

Are road-trailer towing rules the same as towing a skier on the water?

No. The activities involve different licensing, equipment and operating requirements. Check the rules for each separately instead of using one checklist as permission for both.
