Queensland boat licence training (RMDL)

Queensland states that a person must be at least 16 to get a marine licence and that a marine licence is required to operate a boat with an engine greater than 4.5 kW. BoatSafe course completion and a TMR licensing application are separate steps.

What a recreational marine licence covers

A Recreational Marine Driver Licence, commonly shortened to RMDL, is Queensland's recreational marine licence pathway for operating a recreational boat. It is not the same as a personal watercraft licence. Queensland Transport and Main Roads (TMR) says you must be at least 16 to get a marine licence and need a marine licence to operate a boat powered by an engine greater than 4.5 kW. Read the full, current TMR marine licence guidance before acting; this summary is an orientation, not a determination of your eligibility.

The word “boat” can describe many different craft, so identify your intended vessel and use before choosing a pathway. A trainer can talk through their course, but TMR is the authoritative source for Queensland licensing rules. If you plan to ride a personal watercraft as well as operate a boat, check the separate PWCL guidance: Queensland requires an RMDL and PWCL for a personal watercraft licence.

The course and licence are different steps

Queensland's BoatSafe framework is the approved training route for recreational marine licensing. The process includes a BoatSafe course and practical assessment with a BoatSafe provider. The TMR BoatSafe accreditation page explains the provider framework. Ask a provider to confirm that their current course is appropriate for your situation and what the course and assessment entail.

Successfully completing a course does not itself mean BOATN has issued a licence. BOATN does not issue licences at all. Course completion and the separate application to TMR must be treated as distinct steps. Follow the current TMR instructions about making an application and what supporting information is required. If anything in the course material differs from government guidance, check with TMR before relying on it.

A typical learner's planning sequence is: establish the licence type; review official eligibility and application information; choose a provider; ask about course preparation and practical assessment; complete the provider's process; then follow TMR's application instructions. The provider can explain their logistics, while TMR determines licensing decisions.

Preparing for practical training

A little preparation makes a trainer conversation more useful. Write down what you want to operate, whether you already hold a relevant licence, your preferred general region, and any accessibility or communication needs you want to discuss. Ask the provider what identification or materials are needed, where practical learning takes place, how assessment is organised and how to contact them if plans change. Avoid assuming that another state's rules, a friend's experience or an old online discussion describes the current Queensland process.

Practical instruction is not simply a knowledge quiz. Learners may need to understand safe decision-making, vessel controls and the practical environment. The instructor is best placed to explain the actual learning outcomes and assessment format they offer. This page intentionally does not promise a course duration, pass result or preparation checklist prescribed by law: providers control their course logistics and official requirements should be checked in TMR's current material.

BOATN's online preparation can help you become familiar with terms and organise questions before you speak to a trainer. It does not replace in-person training, assessment or official application steps. Use the boat and jetski checklist to structure your preparation, then confirm provider-specific instructions directly.

Find an independent trainer

Use the BOATN trainer directory to explore independent providers. BOATN is a platform operated by OLS Pty Ltd; trainers listed or discovered through it are separate businesses. They set their own service areas, locations, prices, schedules and availability. A directory listing is not a guarantee that a particular date is open or that a provider serves every nearby locality.

Before choosing, ask the trainer whether they currently hold relevant BoatSafe accreditation, whether their course is suitable for the RMDL pathway, what theory and practical assessment components are included, and what happens if weather or other conditions affect a session. Check credentials with the provider. Ask the selected trainer for their current qualifications and accreditation details before booking.

The Queensland service-area overview gives regional context but is not a promise of trainer coverage in every town. Confirm travel arrangements and meeting locations with the provider. You can also compare the jetski licence pathway where PWCL is relevant.

RMDL and PWCL at a glance

The distinction is important when planning courses. This comparison summarises the high-level Queensland relationship described in TMR guidance. It is not a substitute for checking the current rules, the type of craft you intend to operate or your personal circumstances.

A learner who only plans to operate a recreational boat should focus on the RMDL information and discuss the intended vessel with a provider. Someone who also plans to ride a personal watercraft should raise that separately, since the state describes an additional PWCL requirement alongside RMDL. In either case, course logistics and the licensing application remain separate: the trainer explains training, and TMR explains and administers licensing.

Official information and next steps

TMR's marine licence application page is the primary source for eligibility and application details. Its BoatSafe accreditation information is the official provider reference. Check both before relying on a course listing or making an application; requirements and government processes can change.

For help with the platform, contact BOATN support at info@olsaust.com.au or 0408 786 518. For a specific provider's price, class date, location, course inclusions or qualifications, contact that trainer. For an application decision or the latest rules, contact TMR.

Frequently asked questions

At what age can someone get a Queensland marine licence?

Queensland TMR states that a person must be at least 16 to get a marine licence. Check the official page for the complete current requirements.

When is a marine licence required for a boat?

TMR states a marine licence is required to operate a boat powered by an engine greater than 4.5 kW. Refer to TMR's current guidance for complete details.

Does BOATN provide the BoatSafe assessment?

No. BOATN is a platform. Independent BoatSafe providers deliver their own training and practical assessment.

Does completing training automatically issue the licence?

No. Course completion and the separate TMR licensing application are distinct steps.

Can I book a boat licence course online through BOATN?

Open a selected trainer’s shop through the directory, review the current course and location, then follow its registration and checkout options. Confirm suitability and terms before paying.

Does the boat course price always include government licence issue?

Do not assume so. Review the course inclusions and complete quote, then account for the applicable government application fee. The pricing page separates these items.

How much of the boat licence pathway can be prepared online?

Online preparation can support the course, but it does not replace the applicable practical training, assessment or government licence application. Follow the selected provider’s preparation instructions.

What does an existing interstate boat licence change about choosing this course?

Check TMR’s interstate recognition and conversion guidance before purchasing new training. The suitable pathway depends on your actual document and circumstances.

How soon should I apply after receiving boat competency evidence?

Check the Statement of Competency’s issue date. TMR states a six-month validity period for that document; do not mistake it for the lifetime of an issued Queensland marine licence.

What boat course cancellation terms should I review?

Read the terms shown for the selected booking, including any separate fees and weather arrangements. Ask the provider about unclear conditions; do not assume a universal refund or rescheduling promise.
