Boat and jetski licence Queensland
Queensland requires a recreational marine driver licence (RMDL) and a personal watercraft licence (PWCL) to operate a PWC, subject to specific alternatives. BOATN helps with online preparation and trainer discovery; independent trainers deliver courses and TMR administers licences.
Two licence categories, one clear planning question
Queensland distinguishes the Recreational Marine Driver Licence (RMDL) from the Personal Watercraft Licence (PWCL). A learner planning to operate a boat and a personal watercraft should identify both intentions before choosing a course. MSQ states that PWC operation requires both the RMDL and PWCL, with specific alternatives described in its official rules. Read TMR's marine licence requirements and MSQ's PWC guidance before deciding what applies.
The combined path is not a universal bundle promise. The provider's course, assessment, price, meeting location and availability are set by that independent trainer. Ask whether the course you are considering addresses both licensing requirements, what is included and what additional steps remain. BOATN is operated by OLS Pty Ltd and helps learners prepare online, find trainers, register, pay and book through the platform; it does not issue a Queensland licence.
Understand the sequence before booking
Start with your current licences and the craft you intend to use. If you already have an RMDL, tell the trainer and ask how its PWCL course handles that prerequisite. If you need both, ask the provider to explain the course sequence and whether its offering covers the learning and assessment for each category. Do not infer suitability from a course title alone.
The BoatSafe course and assessment are delivered by a provider. Following successful completion, the provider issues a Statement of Competency, and the TMR application is separate. The statement is valid for six months from issue according to TMR guidance. Confirm current accreditation information, application documents and where marine applications are accepted through official TMR guidance and BoatSafe information.
Use the step-by-step boat licence guide to understand the general process, and the jetski licence guide for PWC-specific context. Those references explain different parts of the same decision without implying that every trainer offers an identical combination.
Separate course charges from government fees
The trainer sets its own course charge; BOATN does not publish one fixed public course price or a guaranteed starting amount. Ask for a quote that names the licence pathway, course and practical assessment inclusions, additional charges if any, cancellation or rescheduling terms, and the location. A comparison is useful only when the items are like for like.
MSQ's verified fee schedule lists $132.40 for an RMDL and $132.40 for a PWCL as at 1 July 2026. If applying for two new licences, those two government fees total $264.80, before the trainer's separate charge. Check the current MSQ fee table before applying because fees may change. Read the dedicated prices and fees guide for a careful breakdown.
There is no public evidence here to claim a cheapest course, common regional range or trainer price ranking. For provider-specific costs, contact the independent trainer directly. The cost of a PWC licence guide explains how to keep government and course costs separate.
What to ask an independent provider
Ask whether it currently holds relevant BoatSafe accreditation and how you can verify it. Confirm the exact RMDL and PWCL course components, what you should already hold, the assessment arrangements, how it issues the Statement of Competency and what identification or preparation it expects. Clarify the practical meeting place and how weather or schedule changes are handled.
These are decision questions, not claims about a standard course format. Providers can differ, and BOATN does not promise a specific trainer, location or date. Use the BOATN trainer directory to discover and book with independent providers, then confirm each course detail before relying on it.
The separate TMR application
After successful completion, the provider issues a Statement of Competency. TMR says the statement is valid for six months from issue and must be presented with the application. The original current statement, proof of identity, completed F2334 and applicable government fee are listed in TMR's application guidance; confirm current requirements and accepted service locations before travelling.
The provider's course charge and the licensing fee belong in separate lines of your budget. A booking receipt is not a licence, and a course-completion statement is not the final application decision. Following the provider's process, make the TMR application within the statement's validity period and keep copies of the documents and fee details you checked.
Regional planning and related reading
Your access to the practical meeting point may shape your choice. See the Brisbane guide, Gold Coast guide and Sunshine Coast guide for regional waterway and travel considerations. These pages do not guarantee that a trainer is currently operating at any named site.
For PWC operating rules after licensing, read speed and distance rules, passenger and towing requirements, and the registration and equipment checklist. The legal details can change, so follow the current official sources linked on each guide.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need both RMDL and PWCL for a jetski in Queensland?
Queensland's published rules generally require both an RMDL and PWCL for PWC operation, subject to specified alternatives. Check MSQ's current wording.
Does BOATN issue the licences?
No. Independent trainers deliver training and assessment. Queensland TMR administers licence applications and decisions.
What is the government fee for two new licences?
The verified fee is $132.40 each for RMDL and PWCL, totalling $264.80 as at 1 July 2026. Trainer charges are separate.
Who should compare a combined course with a single-category option?
Anyone who already holds a marine licence should check the missing category first. Compare the actual course scope and total quote rather than assuming both categories need to be purchased again.
Does combined training guarantee a discount?
No. Providers set their own packages and prices. Compare equivalent inclusions and complete current quotes instead of assuming a combined course is always cheaper.
Can I book a group for combined boat and PWC training?
Check the selected trainer’s group registration options and discuss the group’s existing licence categories and practical needs. Do not assume every learner needs an identical package.
Will both categories necessarily be completed at the same practical session?
Ask the provider to confirm the advertised arrangement. A combined product name alone does not establish the exact timing, location or assessment sequence.
Does finishing the combined course automatically issue two licences?
No. Complete the relevant assessment and government application steps. Keep the required competency evidence and confirm your actual licence status before operating.
Which combined-course charges should I check before paying?
Review the complete course quote, any applicable checkout charges, government application fees and cancellation terms. Confirm which licence categories and inclusions the amount covers.
