Boat and jetski licence prices in Queensland
Queensland marine licence costs have two parts: a course charge set by the independent trainer and a government licence fee. The verified MSQ fee is $132.40 for each RMDL or PWCL as at 1 July 2026. BOATN has no fixed public course price.
Two different charges make up the decision
A learner comparing Queensland boat licence prices should separate the independent trainer's course charge from the government fee for the licence. These are paid for different things, and one does not automatically include the other. BOATN does not publish a standard public course price, a 'from' price or a market-wide comparison; independent providers set their own prices and inclusions.
MSQ lists the Recreational Marine Driver Licence (RMDL) at $132.40 and the Personal Watercraft Licence (PWCL) at $132.40 as at 1 July 2026. A person applying for both new licences would pay $264.80 in government licence fees at those published rates, in addition to any trainer course charge. Verify the official current-fee schedule before applying.
Build a useful like-for-like comparison
Ask each provider for the total charge for the licence pathway you need, in writing. Confirm whether the quote includes course delivery and practical assessment, whether any resit or reassessment fee may apply, how course changes or cancellations are handled, and whether travel or optional materials cost extra. BOATN does not assert a universal list of add-ons; these are questions to put to the provider.
Then identify the government fees that fit your situation. Boat-only RMDL applications and PWC pathways are different; Queensland generally requires both RMDL and PWCL for PWC operation. Do not add a PWCL fee if it is not relevant, and do not assume a boat-only quote includes a PWCL course. Check the RMDL guide, PWCL guide and combined pathway.
A comparison worksheet can use columns for course charge, licence type, course and assessment inclusions, location, availability confirmed by trainer, travel, payment and cancellation terms, and separate TMR fees. The point is not to identify a cheapest provider from incomplete information; it is to understand the total commitment and what the provider will deliver.
What the government fee covers—and does not
The MSQ fee is the government licence fee, not a course price. A trainer's separate charge pays for the course arrangement the provider describes. A listing or estimate should clearly distinguish these amounts, and the applicant should verify the government fee at the time of application because it may change over time.
The verified MSQ schedule as at 1 July 2026 lists $132.40 per RMDL and $132.40 per PWCL. This page intentionally does not estimate trainer prices, rank providers, quote competitor prices or publish a made-up average. Ask trainers for a current quote and read the official fee schedule directly.
BOATN, trainers and bookings
BOATN is operated by OLS Pty Ltd. The platform supports online preparation, trainer discovery, registration, payment and booking. Independent trainers deliver their own training and set their own service details, course charges, meeting locations and availability. TMR controls the licence application and issue process.
Use the trainer directory to explore options and confirm current arrangements with the provider. The cost guide for boat licences and jetski cost guide explain the relevant fee distinctions. For regional logistics, see Brisbane, Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast.
A short checklist before paying
Confirm the precise licence pathway, the trainer's current course charge, its inclusions and payment terms, where practical learning takes place, how schedule changes are managed and whether the provider is currently accredited. Keep a record of the separate government fee and the date you checked it.
Avoid choosing based only on a headline amount. A price that omits practical assessment, travel or other terms may not compare with another provider's quote. No BOATN page can confirm a trainer's offer unless the provider has directly provided that detail; ask the trainer for the current facts.
How to compare quotes without guessing
Write down the exact course product and licence outcome quoted, then compare like-for-like. A boat-only quote is not directly comparable with a combined RMDL and PWCL option. Ask if the practical assessment is included, whether any additional charge could apply if a learner needs another attempt, how payment and cancellation work, and whether transport or access to the meeting point changes your total cost.
Keep the date of each quote and fee check. Trainer offers can change, and government fees are set by the official schedule rather than by BOATN. The purpose of a careful comparison is to make the full commitment clear, not to create a lowest-price ranking from incomplete public information.

Frequently asked questions
What is the government fee for a Queensland boat licence?
MSQ lists $132.40 for an RMDL as at 1 July 2026. A trainer's course charge is separate.
How much are the government fees for both RMDL and PWCL?
At the verified 1 July 2026 rates, each is $132.40, totalling $264.80 for both new licence fees.
Does BOATN publish a fixed BoatSafe course price?
No. Independent trainers set their course charges; request current quotes directly and compare what each includes.
Does the course price include the TMR licence fee?
That depends on the provider's quote. Ask for a breakdown and keep course charges distinct from government fees.
Why can the training price vary between BOATN providers?
Providers determine their course prices, inclusions and practical arrangements. Location and product choice can matter, so use the selected trainer’s current quote rather than a market-wide assumed price.
Where can I see the full amount payable for my selected course?
Open the trainer’s shop, select the actual product and location, and review the checkout quote before paying. Ask the provider about an inclusion that is not clear.
Should I check for a platform or system fee in the quote?
Yes. Review the complete quote and any applicable checkout charges, as well as the separate government application fee. Do not assume an advertised course amount describes every payment component.
Do existing licence holders automatically owe two new government licence fees?
No. Identify the category and application transaction you actually need. Use the current official fee schedule and seek TMR clarification if your existing entitlements make the application unclear.
Can a gift voucher or discount be assumed to remove government charges?
No. Read the offer’s actual terms and the checkout result. A course promotion should not be treated as a promise that a separate government licence application is free.
Is the lowest advertised price necessarily the lowest overall course cost?
Not necessarily. Compare equivalent training categories, inclusions, applicable fees and practical travel. Check cancellation terms as well as the final amount.
