Boat and jetski licence FAQs for Queensland
Use these concise answers as an orientation, then follow the linked TMR and MSQ guidance for current legal requirements. BOATN supports online preparation and trainer discovery; independent providers deliver courses and TMR administers licences.
Eligibility and licence categories
Do I need a boat licence? TMR says a marine licence is required to operate a boat with engine power greater than 4.5 kW. The threshold is engine power, not vessel length. Can I use a jetski with an RMDL only? Queensland generally requires both RMDL and PWCL for PWC operation. Read the boat guide and combined guide.
What age can I get a marine licence? TMR says at least 16. A course's earlier enrolment policy is provider-specific, so do not assume a younger learner's eligibility; ask the trainer and TMR.
Training, assessment and applications
Does BOATN issue a licence? No. BOATN supports online preparation, discovery, registration, payment and bookings. Independent trainers deliver their own course and assessment. TMR handles the separate licensing application.
Does the licence arrive automatically after a course? No. After successful course completion, a provider issues a Statement of Competency; TMR says it is valid for six months and is part of the application. Check the step-by-step process, BoatSafe course explanation and current TMR guidance.
Costs and bookings
What does a course cost? Independent trainers set their own charges; BOATN does not publish one fixed public course price. Ask for a quote and inclusions. The government fee is separate: $132.40 each for RMDL or PWCL as at 1 July 2026. See prices and fees and the official MSQ schedule.
Can BOATN guarantee a provider or venue near me? No. Trainer coverage, course details, location and availability vary. Use the directory and confirm directly with the provider before travelling or paying.
Safety, waterways and returning boaters
Do lifejacket rules apply equally everywhere? No. Requirements depend on vessel, waterway and circumstances; check MSQ's current rules. Do speed limits apply uniformly? No. Waterway-specific speed zones and local notices matter. Read the equipment guide, lifejacket guide and speed-limit guide.
Does a Queensland licence expire? TMR says the licence is valid for life. A Statement of Competency is different and has a six-month validity period for the application. See licence expiry information.

Frequently asked questions
Where can I find an independent trainer?
Use the BOATN trainer directory at /app and confirm course details directly with the provider.
Are these answers legal advice?
No. They are summaries. Check the linked official TMR and MSQ sources for current requirements and your circumstances.
What is BOATN's role?
BOATN is a platform operated by OLS Pty Ltd for online preparation and trainer discovery, registration, payment and bookings. Trainers deliver training; TMR administers licensing.
What are the standard Queensland boat and jet ski licence categories?
RMDL covers the recreational boat category; PWCL is the personal watercraft category. The standard PWC pathway requires the relevant boat and PWC entitlements. See the course overview to compare pathways.
What is the minimum age for a Queensland marine licence application?
TMR states a minimum age of 16. Course participation arrangements should also be confirmed with the selected trainer; see the official requirements.
When does a recreational boat’s engine power trigger the Queensland licence requirement?
The standard threshold is engine power greater than 4.5 kW. Check the official rules for your circumstances rather than using boat length as the test.
How should I separate course costs from the government application fee?
Use the selected trainer’s complete quote for training and applicable checkout charges, then check the relevant government transaction separately. The pricing guide explains the distinction.
Is an online theory completion the same as an issued marine licence?
No. Preparation, assessment evidence and government licence issue are different stages. Follow your provider’s course instructions and TMR’s application process.
Where can I find the current regional practical training options?
Use the location directory and open a selected trainer’s shop. A regional planning page is not a live guarantee of a practical date or remaining places.
What should I do with my Statement of Competency after assessment?
Keep it safe and check its issue date against TMR’s six-month validity period when planning your application. Ask the issuing provider about a missing or incorrect document.
Are public practice questions part of my official enrolled assessment?
No. The public practice page is unofficial, does not complete enrolled work and does not issue a pass result or certificate.
